In the far northwest of Scotland in the county of Sutherland flows the Kyle of Tongue (Scottish Gaelic: Caol Thunga), this shallow tidal loch and its surrounding area is designated as the Kyle of Tongue National Scenic Area. On the western side of the bridge that crosses the loch is a single track road that ascends to the small crofting community of Midtown.

From Midtown the views are exceptional looking over the Kyle to the bridge with Ben Loyal providing a dramatic backdrop, as the tide recedes sand banks appear often creating abstract patterns where the water cuts through the coral coloured sand. Crumbling stone dykes and weather beaten fences lead your eye over verdant green fields where livestock graze in peaceful harmony.

Moving on and descending to the small township of Talmine small islands appear dotted with remote sandy beaches that contrast with rock strewn grass and heath land. Here lies Talmine with a few homes and crofts perched on the surrounding hills overlooking Talmine bay. This sandy crescent is bordered with broken, patterned slabby rock where sea thrift thrive. When the tide goes out stones and boulders are revealed where weather and water have created natural works of art.
